FatherMr Thomas Bandy b. 1808, d. 1896
MotherSarah Parks d. 1881
Chartsdescendants of Thomas Bandy (1808-96)
Person-Note* Jane Bandy was born at Chatham in Kent in 1845 while her father was stationed at base headquarters there. She grew to be a strong, healthy child, but very little is known of her early childhood until she arrived at the Colony with her father, mother, brothers and sisters in October 1850. It is apprent she had an illness free trip out as no mention is made of her having any treatment aboard the vessel from the ship's doctor. After the family had settled in to their new environment at Freshwater Bay, she attended the school there and later went to the girls' school in James Street. At 14, she left school and assisted her mother with the house work.
When her mother left for Singapore in 1861, she looked after her 2 younger brothers George and Joseph until her father was able to have them tendered for by Mrs Holder. She then decided to travel to geraldton with a Mr and Mrs Slatter who intended to open a general store there. Here she met and later married Thomas Drage, who was employed by the Brown family, who owned a large station at Glengarry. The couple were married in May 1862.
Besides bringing up the children, Jane had all the housework to do as well as the washing, ironing and other menial tasks. In all, she gave birth to 16 children, (4 died young) and as they grew older, the girls, particularly, were of great assistance to her.
When the couple moved to Northampton to live, she devoted her time to church work and regularly took Sunday School lessons with the local children. For this, she was presented with a lovely book for all the work she had done over the years.
When Thomas died, Jane went to live with her daughter Maria, otherwise known as Molly Jenner, who lived in Geraldton. Here she died of cancer in 1901. The local paper wrote this of her:-
"In our issue on Friday we recorded the death of Mrs Drage Sen., which had occurred on the morning of that day. On Saturday the funeral took place, the remains being borne from the late residence of the deceased to the Geraldton Railway Station, wither they were conveyed by special train to Northampton. At Geraldton the pall-bearers were Messrs Maitland Brown, (Govt Resident), A.H. Du Boulay, W. Moore and Dr Elliot. The body was buried in the Anglican Cemetary at Northampton, the Rev Heun officiating. The coffin was of polished jarrah with black and gold furniture and the funeral arrangements were efficiently carried out by Mr G. Lester. A large concourse of people followed the remains to their last resting place. As a mark of respect to the deceased, the Geraldton Temperance Band, of which body she had been a strong supporter, played the Dead March during the progress of the funeral from Mrs Drage's last residence to ther Railway Station."
So ended an era.

John Bandy

#205, b. 6 Oct 1754, d. 1826
FatherWilliam Bandy b. 16 Sep 1722, d. 1794
Mother(?) Anne d. 1796
Person-Note* Our family lineage can be traced from Edward Bandy who was born in 1686 and married Rebecca George in 1711. They had five living children and the line was carried on by the 4th son William (1722-1794), who married Anne in 1746. They in turn had 6 children, the 4th of whom was John the grandfather of our Thomas. John was born in 1754 (christened on 6 October 1754) and married Anne Dimmock in 1777. 6 children were born to the couple. Anne died after a long illness in 1796 shortly after the birth of her youngest daughter who was also named Anne. Our story really revolves around Martha the second child who was born in 1781.
John was an ambitious man and determined to set himself up as a man of substance in the County of Buckinghamshire. Horses were in great demand for the cavalry during Britain's war against Napoleon (1805-1814) so he concentrated on selective breeding to accomplish his goal. He had great success in his venture and when hostilities ceased he turned his attention to sheep breeding because of the increased demand for woollen goods. By this time his sons had reached manhood, so John, who was not enjoying the best of health, entrusted the running of the farms more to them.
In 1808 Martha travelled to Aylesbury where she gave birth to a son whom she named Thomas after his father Thomas Bull, a labourer who worked in the parish of Turweston. However, the youngster was baptised as Bandy because his father, who was already married, was unable to marry Martha. After the death of his wife Alice in 1812, he married Martha shortly afterwards in the same year. John employed him on his property at Turweston and the couple lived in a large cottage with the 2 boys of his former marriage and Thomas.
Thomas was not particularly interested in farm life generally, but he had a particular flair for leatherwork. and after a while, became expert in the making of footware.
As he grew older, his grandfather determined that Thomas should have the best education he could procure. John discovered that a young man in Turweston was giving private lessons and he enroled the boy for instruction. In an age when education for the poorer classes was not deemed necessary, it was most fortunate that Thomas was able to have these lessons.

Person-Note* Thomas Bandy was able to obtain leave to farewell his wife and two daughters on their journey to Singapore, and although Sarah was confident that Thomas wsould change his mind and follow after he could arrange his discharge, he had firmly made up his mind he would not. Naturally the girls were excited about the trip and they watched preparations for the journey going on with an inner sense of joy whilst their parents talked quietly on the deck. At last came the time for departure. The mooring ropes were cast off and the sails set, enabling the ship to move slowly out of the harbour. Little did they realise that it would be the last time they would see one another again.
